Domestic Violence Facts



¨      1 in 3 women experience violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime  (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2010)

¨      1 in 4 women experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner  (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2010)

¨    1994-2010, 4 in 5 victims of domestic violence were female & women ages 18-34 experienced highest rates of domestic violence  (Department of Justice, 2012)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          


¨      44%  of lesbian women experience violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime  (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2010) 

¨   Bisexual women experience significantly higher rates of domestic violence than  lesbian & heterosexual women: more than half experience violence & severe physical violence by  an intimate partner  (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2010) 

¨      1 in 4 gay men & 1 in 3 bisexual men experience intimate partner violence    (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2010)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    


¨      Almost half of teens ages 13-18 report having a controlling partner & 80% report knowing someone who has been controlled by a partner (Liz Claiborne, Inc., 2009)

¨      1 in 3 teens report experiencing physical &  sexual abuse in a dating relationship & more than half report knowing someone who has experienced physical or sexual abuse in a dating relationship (Liz Claiborne, Inc., 2009)                                                                                                                                                                                                   

¨      LGBTQ teens experience higher rates of dating abuse: 43% report experiencing physical abuse & 59% report experiencing emotional abuse by a dating partner (Urban Institute, 2013)



¨      In 2007, 14% of all homicides were committed by intimate partners, 70% of victims were women (Department of Justice, 2008)

¨      It is estimated that on average 4 women are killed by an intimate partner every day in the united states (Department of Justice, 2008)

¨   The costs of intimate partner violence are estimated to exceed $5.8 billion annually, $4.1 billion assoicated with medical & mental health care costs  (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, 2003)                                                                                                                        


¨       In 2012, SafeLink, MA’s statewide domestic violence hotline, received over 30,000 violence hotline related calls (Casa Myrna, 2012)             

¨       In a single day: 1,752 victims of domestic violence received services across MA, while 443 requests for services were unmet due to a lack of resources (NNEDV 24-hour Census, 2012)

¨     2003-2013, there were 277 domestic violence related homicides in Massachusetts, 60% of victims were female victims of domestic violence (Jane Doe, Inc, 2013)
