Direct Service Volunteer Opportunities

Make a difference in the lives of women and children…

The opportunities below require that volunteers complete 25 hours of
training provided by Casa Myrna (or one of our coalition partners) and
pass a CORI check. We are looking for individuals to serve as
advocates in our residential programs with women and children, and
to answer calls at SafeLink, the statewide domestic violence hotline.
Spanish and Portuguese speakers especially welcome!

Residential Programs:
• Spending time with children, both one-on-one and in group childcare: reading, playing games, teaching, arts & crafts, homework help, etc.
• Be a mentor to a woman who may need guidance with parenting, job search, housing search, etc.
• Assisting women with school/job applications, computer skills, homework, etc.
• Shopping, cooking and planning activities for the women
• Helping families who are new to the shelter navigate the Boston area
• Accompanying women on errands and to appointments
• Decorating and creating a warm, comfortable environment in shelter
• Helping staff prepare for and run holiday activities and special events

The SafeLink Hotline:

• Assessing the needs of each caller
• Offering support and counseling
• Providing immediate crisis intervention
• Educating callers on the issues and dynamics of domestic violence
• Assisting callers to create plans to live more safely
• Referring callers to appropriate community resources
• Connecting callers to safe shelter

Requirements:
• Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
• If you are someone who has been in an abusive relationship, we ask that you be at least one year removed from the abuse (and one year removed from Casa Myrna Vazquez’ support services) before applying to become a volunteer.
• We deeply value proficiency in a diverse array of languages, but require that volunteers have at least an intermediate level of skill in English.
• Volunteers are not required to be US citizens.
• Scheduling requirements are flexible, as the hotline and residences operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

To Become a Volunteer:
1 ) Please email vol@casamyrna.org with your contact information and the best time to contact you.
2 ) We will call to set up a time for you to come to Casa Myrna for an interview.
3 ) If you are approved, we will schedule training and work with you and our staff to find an appropriate placement
4 ) Volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment of 100 hours of service.

If you have any question about volunteer opportunities, please contact
Casa Myrna at (617) 521-0100 or vol@casamyrna.org
