OUTREACH & PREVENTION PROGRAMS

S.T.A.R. (Safety, Trust and Relationships) is Casa Myrna's peer-led
teen domestic violence prevention program. The program’s goal is to
teach teens to recognize the warning signs of controlling, abusive and
potentially dangerous intimate relationships. 8 peer educators receive
40 hours of training on a domestic violence prevention curriculum.
Among the topics covered are patterns of control that lead to abuse,
gender stereotypes, street violence, the media’s influence in promoting violence and disrespect, how language can contribute to the problem, and domestic violence in the family. Peer educators are coached in public speaking, facilitating groups and workshops, and communicating effectively. They are mentored by 3 teens who served as peer educators the year before. Once trained, they begin presenting the STAR workshops at Boston middle and high schools, community centers and church groups. Casa Myrna provides training on the issue of domestic violence to businesses, law enforcement personnel, medical providers, faith-based groups, community centers, health centers and other human service agencies. The agency is part of a training consortium of domestic violence programs in the greater Boston area which collaborate to provide a standardized training on domestic violence to all new staff members. Casa Myrna is present throughout the year at ethnic and religious festivals, health fairs, college campus fairs and other events across Massachusetts that provide a forum in which to raise awareness about domestic violence and the services provided by the agency.
